Late-Medieval Waterford Model

This portfolio showcases a scale model of medieval Waterford, illustrating the city as a fortified settlement shaped by defence, trade, and daily life. Unlike later planned periods, medieval Waterford developed organically, with narrow streets, irregular plots, and strong boundary walls reflecting the practical needs and social structure of the time.

The model focuses on the spatial relationship between the city walls, gates, quays, religious buildings, and residential areas, emphasising Waterford’s role as a strategic port and one of Ireland’s earliest urban centres. Attention is given to the texture and density of the built environment, conveying how movement, protection, and commerce influenced the form of the city.
